Character Name:
Thackery Binx

Age: 316 years

Canon: Hocus Pocus

Canon point: Mid-movie, after the Sanderson Sisters have apparently been killed at the high school and Binx, Max, Dani, and Allison have returned to the Dennisons' home to rest

History: Wikipedia

Personality:

  • (+) Brave: Time and time again, Binx has proven willing to throw himself into danger when the cause is just. Though he hasn't faced potential death as a consequence in 300 years, he can certainly still feel pain. Even when he was an unpowered human teenager, Binx stormed the home of three witches by himself in an attempt to save his sister, despite almost certainly knowing their retribution could be worse than death. Despite being all but powerless against the Sandersons as a cat, he is waiting and ready to throw down when they come back to life, again despite the likelihood they can still do worse to him than they already have.

  • (+) Steadfast: With all his family and friends long since dead, there's nothing to tie Binx to Salem...except, of course, for his self-assigned mission to guard the Sanderson Sisters' house against their return. He has been unwavering in that mission for three hundred years, returning every Halloween to patrol the Sanderson house. Nor is his commitment limited to that lonely vigil; as soon as the candle was lit and the Sanderson Sisters returned from the grave, Binx immediately pivoted to the next stage: keeping the kids responsible alive and dealing with the threat. He is very mission-focused, capable of staying on task for literal centuries.

  • (-) Fatalistic: The flipside of the three-hundred-year-old coin is that Binx has become utterly resigned to his circumstances, with very low expectations for his own quality of life. He has subsided on mice and rats likely for most of his time as a cat (he can't die of starvation, but he can presumably suffer from it), and can barely conceive of the relative ease of the house pet life offered to him by Dani. For several hundred years he has held no hope of improving his own situation; he could even be said to have discarded that sort of hope due to finding it more painful than helpful. As far as he's concerned, the Sanderson Sisters being (apparently) permanently dead and himself still doomed to walk the earth forever is better than any outcome he'd ever expected. His tendency is to attempt to maintain the status quo for fear of something worse coming along rather than to attempt to make things better.

  • (+) Caring: Binx is as deeply scarred by the loss of his sister as he is by the loss of his own humanity. He readily risked his life to save Emily, and his failure doomed him to his current cursed life. However, rather than becoming bitter or focusing exclusively on revenge, Binx made himself a protector of the community from which he'd been taken, likely despite knowing they'd be after him with torches and pitchforks if they knew there was a talking cat lurking about. Selflessly, he gave himself over to ensuring that no one else would suffer the same hurts he had. He is quick to empathize (and perhaps project) when it comes to sibling sets close to the same age he and Emily had been at the time of her death and the start of his eternal life, and he has a particular protective fondness of younger children. That he has remained so warm-hearted after centuries of disconnect from the people he loved speaks to how deeply ingrained his kindness truly is.

  • (-) Ineffectual: Binx ought to be an ideal guardian: he's observant, committed, and reasonably bright. However, when push comes to shove he's of disappointingly little use. As a human teenager, he was brave enough to enter the Sandersons' home, but through a combination of hesitation and an inability to come up with a particularly effective plan on the spot, he did not act quickly or decisively enough to save his sister, Emily. As a cat in 1993, he was in the right place at the right time to prevent Max Dennison from lighting the Black Flame Candle, but failed to act before Max had a lighter in his hand next to the candle, and furthermore failed to do more than briefly startle the group. For all his ability to retain and apply pertinent information, Binx struggles to act decisively in moments of crisis. He either doesn't have a plan and struggles to come up with one on the fly, or when he does have a plan he struggles to adapt quickly enough to changing circumstances.

  • Suitability: With the Sanderson Sisters (apparently) defeated once and for all and himself dropped into a new world, Binx is abruptly at a loss for purpose. Given his deep distrust of magic and his tendency to cling to any reasonably positive status quo, ADI's mission will immediately appeal to him. He may remain suspicious of the organization due to their use of "magic" items, even sparingly, but regardless of his feelings about ADI, going on guard against the impending apocalypse is just a higher stakes version of the personal mission to which he dedicated the last three hundred years of his life. And, too, Binx is simply driven in general to protect people, and the best place for him to do so is in Gloucester.

Powers/Abilities: Binx is incapable of dying, and heals mortal wounds within a minute or two of receiving them. Beyond that, he is nothing more than a talking cat.

Entity Affinity: Binx is unwillingly affiliated with the Lonely. He has been isolated from humankind for the past three centuries, and even still he mourns the loss of his sister. While at a glance his curse might seem End-related, the truth of the matter is that Binx has no fear of death, nor any affinity for causing the death of others. His immortality denies him the chance to reunite with the spirits of his family in the afterlife, and he has coped with that ongoing loss by throwing himself into protecting others. His single-minded focus on his mission excludes all other concerns; if Binx were to sink deeper into the Lonely it would likely take the form of throwing himself into ADI's work to the exclusion of relationships or any form of comfort.

    Inventory: Nothing.

Samples: Walking and talking; lingering Puritan sensibilities.
